West Germany has a wide variety of fascinating trains and railways. From the peninsular of Sylt, served by car carrying trains, to the industrial heartland of the Rhine and the Ruhr this program surveys the North German Railway Scene.
Danish connections by land and train-carrying ferry are examined and we visit Deutsche Bundesbahn’s narrow gauge line on the island of Wangerooge. The nearby island of Spiekeroog also has rail transport but this time it’s horse drawn. The major cities of Hannover and Koln are visited and all kinds of trains from major international passenger and freight workings to humble regional and commuter services are included.
We visit Bebra, the arrival point for many refugee trains from the East and cross border workings from Holland and Luxembourg are shown. The industrial scene is not ignored and you will see a line which serves an industry in West Germany but is accessed through a corner of its Eastern neighbor’s territory.
There is some live steam to whet the appetites of those who aspire to visit this part of Germany and many preserved railways are shown including a tiny narrow gauge line with a fascinating collection of motive power. Even linear induction traction is included with a visit to West Germany’s elevated test track.
